Mobile Defense is hands down the best tracking and recovery app there is for the myTouch and Android. The service offers a number of different ways to track down a lost or stolen myTouch. It runs intermittently in the background, so that the service cannot be easily stopped in a stolen device. Once you have installed and configured this app on your myTouch, you’ll be able to login to the Mobile Defense website where you can see your phone pinpointed on a map. The app can use both the GPS radio as well as cellular triangulation to locate your device in case the GPS is turned off. The website also lets you see recent activity on the device depending on what settings you’ve enabled on the app.Â

Â

The service sends you relevant emails as events take place with your lost or stolen phone, including whether or not your myTouch is locked. Another invaluable service is a notification that tells you when the SIM in your myTouch is changed, and actually gives you full details about the new SIM – including the phone number. This is a whole another layer of information that you can use to escalate your loss or theft to the appropriate authorities. Mobile Defense also pays attention to battery life, and is not a significant drain on power at all on the myTouch. This is one of the most useful myTouch apps on the Android market today, and the developers remain very responsive to problems and issues. A must-download for all myTouch owners.

Layar is a powerful augmented-reality application for the myTouch and Android that is now available globally on the Android Market (it was previously available only in the Netherlands). This fantastic myTouch app offers a real-time overlay (“layar”) of information over your myTouch’s camera image when you launch the app. Pointing and panning your myTouch camera around will pull up information overlayed on the images seamlessly and with absolutely no stuttering or waiting for data to load. You can load different Layars, each with its own specialty. For instance, the Google Local Search layar will pull up data from Google’s local search and show detailed information on restaurants, establishments, and businesses as you point your camera at them.Â

Â

The application offers several choices of layars already: Flickr, Wikipedia, Twitter, and Google Local Search among others. Several other layars are expected to come out as the platform matures. The apps “Reality Browser” includes categories for popular and featured points-of-interest to help discover new places more easily. If you prefer, you can change back to a regular map or list view. Many layars offer the ability to call the establishment right from the application, and other layars come with the ability to share a link or interact with the location in other manners. This is one of the most amazing and promising new myTouch apps that is both functional and just plain cool to use.

Aloqa is an intelligent local recommendation app that has push notifications on the myTouch and Android. Aloqa proactively informs you about relevant things around you that you care about. So unlike many of the other location-aware recommendation applications, you don’t need to pull up the browser or another application to learn more about what’s happening around you – you can just look at your phone and the information is right there. Aloqa can notify you of friends who are close by, parties, new restaurants, events that are nearby, and even notify you of Wi-Fi hotspot and gas stations in your vicinity.Â

Â

This myTouch app uses a “channel” metaphor to add various categories of interest. There are dozens of channels already, covering a wide variety of interests and activities. The app notifies you every time an event of interest comes up in the channels that you pick. The notification sound and mode can be modified to your tastes, ranging from a custom sound to just a simply vibrate. Aloqa does pay attention to battery-life, and includes optimizations to help conserve power. Aloqa is an advanced myTouch app that has the potential to really change the way you discover the world around you.

The CardioTrainer myTouch app is a fitness and calorie counter application that records your tracks, elevation gains, time, and calories. This is a very polished application and it comes with a tutorial and videos explaining how you can get the most out of the app. This myTouch app monitors your tracks via the GPS and shows it in real-time on a responsive map right within the application. The app comes with an autopause feature and voice outputs that automatically gives you relevant information as you go through a session. The voice output is quite invaluable as it lets you continue uninterrupted while still monitoring your progress through the app.Â

Â

The application automatically saves your data and uploads it to a server. You can then access all your data online with a special code you’ll receive when you download the app. The online information presents statistics and history data in a very easy-to-use manner. You can also share relevant aspects of your workouts through a Facebook application. The app itself is free on the Android Market, but also comes with $2.99 add-on “racing module” that let’s you race against your previous track data – a very powerful motivation tool. One of the better-designed myTouch apps and a must-have for fitness enthusiasts.

PicSay is an excellent photo editor for the myTouch and Android. PicSay allows you to creatively spice-up your photos and easily share them with friends and family. While being really fun to use, it comes with a pretty powerful range of image editing tools. These include color correction, cut outs, distortions and a range of special effects. Word balloons allows you to insert witticisms and dialog to characters. This myTouch app comes in two verstions: PicSay Pro and PicSay Lite.Â

Â

PicSay Pro comes with a dazzling array of image filters and enhancement options and is certainly well worth the 1.99 Euro price tag. The list of fonts and special effects will leave you wondering if you’re on a desktop program! The “lite” version is free and is missing some powerful options, but is quite useful nevertheless. This is one of the better myTouch apps and is really useful for any form of image editing and enhancing for everyday use as well as for more powerful or professional work.

ShopSavvy will change how you shop forever. This myTouch app lets you scan barcodes with your myTouch camera and displays local and online prices so that you can get the best deal for whatever product you’re looking for. With thousands of retailers and hundreds of thousands of products listed, you’ll never have to worry about losing a good deal. Just point the myTouch camera at a barcode, have ShopSavvy process it and list the available deals sorted by price. If, for some reason, the barcode isn’t recognized, you can search for a product by title. ShopSavvy uses the in-built GPS to find you the best deals closest to your current location.Â

The app just keeps getting better. You can see user-generated product reviews and ratings, you can setup price alerts to notify you when a product falls below a certain price range, and you can organize and categorize your products easily with wish lists. Another huge convenience is the history feature that stores the items you’ve scanned previously so you can easily pull the information up whenever you want to return to it. In short, this is a comprehensive and very well-designed shopping app that will really improve your shopping experience.

What would you do if you lost your new T-Mobile myTouch? Well, thanks to the Pintail myTouch app, you can prompt your lost or stolen myTouch to send an SMS to a friend’s device that pinpoints its location and a nice link to Google Maps to help you locate it quickly. You configure the app with a secret personal pin number. Let’s say your pin number is “4751″. When you lose your myTouch, you simply use your friend’s phone to send an SMS to your lost phone with the text: “locate 4751″ and your lost or stolen myTouch will send back an SMS to your friend’s phone with the current location.Â

Â

This is one of the best myTouch apps out there, and it works like a charm. But the following conditions need to be true for it to send back the current location: your myTouch needs to be on, and your GPS or cellular radio (for triangulation) must be on. Leaving the GPS on can drain your battery pretty quickly, so if your myTouch is lost or stolen, you would want to send the SMS quickly before the battery drains out. If you share your pin number with family or friends, they can then query your current location with an SMS. A great little app for the myTouch.

Locale is a brilliantly executed app for the T-Mobile myTouch and Android that does what it’s designed to do and gets out of the way. Locale is a highly customizable application that helps you customize various aspects of your phone based on location, time, and other parameters. For example, you could use Locale to turn your ringer off automatically when you walk into a library or movie theater. You could have it switch ringtones when you walk out of your office building. Similarly, you can change wallpapers based on the time of day or locations.

Â

The interface is intuitive and easy-to-use. You can do pretty advanced stuff with multiple conditions for each setting. So you can have Locale remind you that your battery is low on charge, but only when you walk into your home. You can also have it switch between WiFi and cellular wireless based on how much battery charge is remaining. With its advanced customization options, this is one of the more sophisticated and useful apps for the T-Mobile myTouch.

Sherpa is an advanced location-aware recommendation engine with a powerful “passive personalization” feature that silently learns your preferences as you use your T-Mobile myTouch 3G. This myTouch app works in the background and starts learning about your favorite theater, bank, and other locations that you frequent. You can also use it to find businesses and restaurants close to your current location and filter by categories or distance. If you like a specific cafe or restaurant, you can tap a little thumbs-up icon on the app and it’ll offer other recommendations similar to the one you just liked.Â

Â

Digging into a specific business or restaurant allows you to see reviews, ratings, address and other information regarding the establishment. It pulls in reviews from Citysearch and Yelp. You can even call from right within the app by tapping the call button. This myTouch application also includes mapping and directions and a fast search that you can filter based on categories. The passive personalization and breadth of the directory makes other location-based directories redundant. And the longer you use this app the more useful it gets.

The Imeem myTouch application is a streaming music application associated with the online social networking website. It doesn’t actually allow you play a specific track, but it’ll play a “radio” of tracks by an artist of your choice or similar tracks to the one that you select. Your selections and ratings are stored along with your online profile, so you can go back-and-forth between the app and the online version with no hassles. It also shows useful community favorites and recommendations based on other listeners of Imeem.Â

There is a wide choice of music you can select from, and the streaming quality is pretty good with no stuttering or delays. This myTouch app shows you your most recently played tracks, your saved tracks, and a search function all accessible from any point within the app. A very functional, easy-to-use app that plays nicely in the background as you go about working or playing on your T-Mobile myTouch 3G.
