Touchpal is an advanced soft keyboard that will significantly improve your typing speed on the myTouch. It comes with several advanced and intuitive features that are a leap above the default keyboard on your myTouch. This myTouch application offers gesture controls, predictive text, several different layout choices, and a slew of other small features that make typing on the myTouch much easier and faster. For instance, to type a capital letter, all you have to do is press a letter and swipe up. Similarly, swiping down on a key will enter the symbol or alternate character corresponding to that letter. You can switch between layouts by swiping left or right across the whole keyboard.Â

Â

This award-winning application comes with four language packs for now (you’ll need to download these separately from the main application on the Android market). The four include English, French, Chinese, and German for now with more on the way. Once you download the main application, you’ll need to install at least one language pack. If you install more than one, you can go to a “mixed” language setting that allows you to seamlessly type in both languages whenever you like. This soft keyboard has amazingly good predictive capabilities, beyond anything else available for Android phones at the moment. Needlessly to say it works perfectly with all capabilities in landscape mode. Touchpal is free for the moment on the Android Market, but is unlikely to remain so for too long.

Mobile Defense is hands down the best tracking and recovery app there is for the myTouch and Android. The service offers a number of different ways to track down a lost or stolen myTouch. It runs intermittently in the background, so that the service cannot be easily stopped in a stolen device. Once you have installed and configured this app on your myTouch, you’ll be able to login to the Mobile Defense website where you can see your phone pinpointed on a map. The app can use both the GPS radio as well as cellular triangulation to locate your device in case the GPS is turned off. The website also lets you see recent activity on the device depending on what settings you’ve enabled on the app.Â

Â

The service sends you relevant emails as events take place with your lost or stolen phone, including whether or not your myTouch is locked. Another invaluable service is a notification that tells you when the SIM in your myTouch is changed, and actually gives you full details about the new SIM – including the phone number. This is a whole another layer of information that you can use to escalate your loss or theft to the appropriate authorities. Mobile Defense also pays attention to battery life, and is not a significant drain on power at all on the myTouch. This is one of the most useful myTouch apps on the Android market today, and the developers remain very responsive to problems and issues. A must-download for all myTouch owners.

Layar is a powerful augmented-reality application for the myTouch and Android that is now available globally on the Android Market (it was previously available only in the Netherlands). This fantastic myTouch app offers a real-time overlay (“layar”) of information over your myTouch’s camera image when you launch the app. Pointing and panning your myTouch camera around will pull up information overlayed on the images seamlessly and with absolutely no stuttering or waiting for data to load. You can load different Layars, each with its own specialty. For instance, the Google Local Search layar will pull up data from Google’s local search and show detailed information on restaurants, establishments, and businesses as you point your camera at them.Â

Â

The application offers several choices of layars already: Flickr, Wikipedia, Twitter, and Google Local Search among others. Several other layars are expected to come out as the platform matures. The apps “Reality Browser” includes categories for popular and featured points-of-interest to help discover new places more easily. If you prefer, you can change back to a regular map or list view. Many layars offer the ability to call the establishment right from the application, and other layars come with the ability to share a link or interact with the location in other manners. This is one of the most amazing and promising new myTouch apps that is both functional and just plain cool to use.

Phonebook is a contacts manager application for the T-Mobile myTouch and Android. It significantly improves the contacts management process on the myTouch and offers an intuitive and seamless interface for browsing through long lists of contacts. The search is fast and the app offers several sort options in addition to other useful customization settings. The app shows the latest interaction between you and the contact currently being viewed as a little note below the contact picture. Phonebook uses color codes for each piece of information which really helps in getting used to this app.Â

Other  options on this myTouch application include voicemail management, the ability to search for the most frequently contacted individuals as well as the least frequently contacted individuals (which might help you keep in touch!). Most information can be looked up with a single tap on the screen and this app works perfectly in landscape mode, which makes it so much faster to run through lists. Phonebook is an excellent integrated contacts and messaging app for the T-Mobile myTouch. One of the more colorful myTouch apps, this is a must-download for all myTouch owners.

Greed is a Google Reader RSS app for Android and the myTouch. This app is fully synchronized (two-way) with your Google Reader account, so changes made from your myTouch will show up even when you access Google Reader from a desktop later. You can mark articles as read, star them for later attention, organize feeds, and copy & email them from right within the app. You can also see your friends’ shared items. Formatting is excellent and the content flows and fits the app perfectly – you won’t need to tap around to zoom in like you may have to do if you’re accessing Google Reader through the browser.Â

Â

Greed on the myTouch is pretty quick and syncing is smooth and usually done in a few seconds. You can customize notifications based on specific conditions – say the number of unread articles reaches a certain figure. The app also lets you open articles in your browser if you prefer. Greed has it’s own home screen widget and the paid version comes with offline caching as well. Podcast support and the ability to share through Twitter round of the list of features for this highly functional myTouch app.

The ChompSMS myTouch app for Android lets you heavily customize the text-messaging experience on your T-Mobile myTouch. It acts as a complete alternative to your current SMS viewing application. You can see messages threaded like a chat with differently speech bubbles for each person and conversation you have (similar to that other smartphone). Every aspect of the app, right down to the default colors is customizable. You can change your SMS notification ring-tones, have your phone vibrate and have the backlight come on when you receive a message, and even customize the general notification box that tells you that you have a new message.Â

Â

This is one of the more usable myTouch apps, and the default settings are quite good enough to simply install and get rolling. The app also acts as a front-end to the “ChompSMS” messaging service, but only if you expressly want it to. If you enable this service in the settings section of the app, Â it works as an alternative to your carrier’s text messaging service, and you’ll need to buy credits (10 cents per credit for users in the US) to send messages. The app works very well with your existing T-Mobile SMS service, and is not in-your-face at all about pushing the alternate service – so no complaints there at all. All in all, a very intuitive and customizable messaging app for the T-Mobile myTouch.

This app allows you to customize almost all aspects of power management on your T-Mobile myTouch. Pre-built profiles include “Browsing mode,” “Low Battery,” “A/C Powered,” and many others in addition to user-generated ones. Moving to a specific profile will enable a set of conditions like turning of the GPS, WiFi, or changing screen brightness.Â

Judicious use of this app will allow you to extract far more out of your myTouch battery than you would otherwise. The simplicity and ease-of-use of the application will let you do this without a second thought, and you’ll soon find yourself deftly managing your battery-life over the course of the day in anticipation of various activities. A must-download app for the T-Mobile myTouch.
